Welcome
I'm Elena, a senior at Maggie L. Walker Governor's School for Government and International Studies. My website is dedicated to the artwork I have done since freshman year and the artwork I am currently working on. I hope you enjoy my art as much as I enjoy making it.
Artist Statement
I think I have always been an artist. As soon as I was able to hold a crayon I started making artwork. At first, I made art because it was fun, and my friends thought it was cool and impressive. In more recent years, art has become something very personal to me. I have tried to be more intentional with the art I make, creating pieces that revolve around how I perceive the world, and my role in it. This year I have worked towards improving the composition of my pieces by adding more movement and using dramatic colors and various mediums to make my ideas come to life. The way I perceive the world centers around others, so most of my pieces also revolve around figures and other people who are important to me.
Although my art is a lot more personal than it was when I was little, I still am greatly motivated and driven by the joy I feel in seeing others’ reactions to what I make. I tend to select ideas that originate as deeply personal and niche but as I receive advice from peers, my piece transforms into something more broad and relatable. My favorite materials to work with are acrylic paint and watercolor. I love the way the colors mix and layer on top of each other, as they tend to reveal the process by which the piece was made, unlike other materials, such as oil paints, which tend to cover up and blend into the early stages of the piece.
